How to remove BlackBerry handheld device IT Security Policy

If you are stuck with existing BlackBerry IT Security Policy where it prevents you from installing third party application, bluetooth pairing is disabled, a lock on the firewall and certain functions are disabled, there is hope. This happens usually when you bought or inherited BlackBerry device from eBay or someone.

The same applies if you are trying to sell your BlackBerry device and you want to make sure it is ‘clean’ and back to its factory default state, there are ways to do it.

You have three options as far as I know:

Option 1

This option is by far the cleanest and error-free provide peace of mind and less frustration. If accessing to your corporate BlackBerry Enterprise Server is still possible, please let your ex-Administrator know and ask him/her to help you out. The minimum requirement for this are:

  • Java based BlackBerry device
  • BlackBerry Device Software Version 4.2.2 and above
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server Version 4.1 SP4
  • BlackBerry Corporate Data Plan Enabled (check with your wireless carrier)

Let the Administrator know that you want him/her to wipe the device with factory setting. The policy that he/she should be looking for is called ‘Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults IT Policy rule’ and can be found under Security Policy group. It should be set to True.

Remote Wipe Reset to Factory Defaults IT Policy rule

Here is the description of the policy:

Specify whether the BlackBerry device resets itself to factory default settings when it receives the Erase Data and Disable Handheld IT Admin command over the wireless network. Set this IT policy rule to True to require the BlackBerry device to permanently delete its stored IT policy and delete all third party applications, in addition to performing the BlackBerry device wipe process.

If you do not set this rule, a default value of False will be used.

This rule applies only to Java-based BlackBerry devices version 4.2.2 and higher.

Once, you get your device activated with BES, you should be able to confirm that your device has been reset to factory settings by doing the following steps.

1. Go to Options > Status
2. Type buyr

You should be able to see the last two entries:

BUYR tip to view Policy Enforcement
Options > Status

BUYR tip to view Policy Enforcement

If you see the following entries instead, that means your device is still having IT Policy enforced.

Data Usage: IT Policy Enabled
Voice Usage: IT Policy Enabled

If you are receving ‘IT policy was rejected so enterprise activation has been cancelled’ while performing Enterprise Activation, please wipe your device locally as per KB14328. (If link is broken please Google it)

Option 2 and Option 3

Option 2 involves a third party tool called JL_Cmder with resettofactory command.
Option 3 involves a little more work where you have to copy blank IT Policy on the Device.

Both options and their step by step guide can be found in BlackBerryForums Remove IT Policy post.
